25th International Congress on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine

The International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine is organised by the department of Intensive Care Emergency Medicine of Erasme Hospital, Free University of Brussels, in association with the Belgian Society of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (SIZ). The meeting is held every year in March, in Brussels and this year we will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Started in 1980, this meeting has become established as one of the largest in its field, now attracting more than 4700 participants from countries world-wide.

SAFE Study Publication Results: Albumin is Safe

The clear outcome of the SAFE (Saline vs. Albumin Fluid Evaluation) study: There is no difference in the 28-day mortality rate between saline and albumin in Intensive Care patients. The results of this trial were published in the New England Journal of Medicine on May 27, 2004. (1)

Conducted in Australia and New Zealand, the study was designed to assess the safety of albumin. The primary endpoint of the study was to look at 28-day all cause mortality in critically ill patients receiving 4% albumin or saline: 7,000 patients were enrolled in the study during 2002 and 2003.
